LILY CHIN

Thursday (all day session)10:00 - 3:00 Lunch included

DRAPING DEMONSTRATION this class has been replaced
Lily will conduct the draping demonstration Saturday morning at 10:15

Tips, Tricks and Hints - UPDATED 9-16
Learn all the little secrets to make knitting life easier and better. Find out how to cast on in pattern. Join a new cone skein of yarn or a new color without a loose old and new stitch. See ways of attaching buttons as you work. View the absolute best buttonholes. Work the smoothest short rows with no lumps or bumps. Create invisible circular bind offs on circular knitting where the beginning and end are absolutely imperceptible. Weave in those little ends that are too short to put through a darning needle. Take away lots of small "fix-its" and improve those details.

FITTING TIPS FOR MORE CUSTOMIZED GARMENTS
Have you ever followed a pattern’s directions to the letter only to find it still doesn’t fit? Learn how to evaluate a garment’s measurements and relate them to YOURS. Get to choose sizes that will be more successful for the wearer. See the areas of alteration in order to fine-tune fit. Sleeve lengths, garment lengths and garment ease will all be covered. Say goodbye to sagging, drooping and hike-ups forever !

Friday Saturday Classes

FLOATING STRAND LACE
Proficiency Level: Advanced Beginner. This technique will give you the look of lace without a lace carriage and without lots of tedious hand transfers. It's a fun way to create curtains, doilies, shawls and tablecloths. It can also be the basis for vertical contrast patterns and needle-weaving. All machines.

PINSTRIPED KNITTING
Proficiency Level: Intermediate. A quick and easy way of creating complicated-looking fabric with slimming optical effects, even those with manual machines can do this (though patterning capabilities make it that much more easy). Simple increases, decreases, color combinations, and cables add to the illusion of complexity.

MANUAL AND AUTOMATIC WEAVING TECHNIQUES
Proficiency Level: Advanced Beginner. Have any novelty yarns that won't go thru your machine? Are you allergic to certain fibers? Do you want to use luxurious yarns without spending a fortune? Would you like a rich, textural fabric without a whole lot of effort or a very unique, textural fabric you never thought possible on the machine? Knit-weave can be the solution to all your needs. At least 4 methods (many I've developed myself for magazines) will be shown. All machines.

DRAPING DEMONSTRATION
One of the more advanced ways of drafting a pattern is to drape commercial fabric directly onto the body. This ensures better fit and allows more creative shaping and construction. See the process at work as Lily will drape at least 2 different types of garments onto volunteers. If you wish to be one of the volunteers in having this custom-made pattern made for you, there will be a $10 materials fee.

ALTERNATIVE CLOSURES
Tired of the button-thing? Want to see what other choices there are besides the obvious? Join us in discovering other exciting ways to close up garments. Find out what works best in which situations

ASK LILY CHIN
Want to know about marketing your work? Do you wonder how to get your work published? What exactly is involved in writing a pattern? How does the manufacturing sector decide what colors are chosen for the fashion season? What is the best approach to take when vying for jobs as teacher or demonstrator? Where can you find a particular tool or fiber? No questions are too big or small. This is the time to get the answer you’ve always wanted to know.

SUSAN LAZEAR

SUNDAY ALL DAY SESSION 10:00 - 3:00 Lunch included

Please note: This is not a "hands on" class. Susan will conduct a paced demonstration. You can follow along with your own notebook computer, but she will not have time to stop the class and give one on one assistance.

Susan will spend the day expanding on these 2 classes. Bring your notebook computers and follow along. Owning the software is not required, a demo version is available on line for you to download and use.

GARMENT DESIGNER II: LEARNING A LITTLE MORE
If you have some basics, and want to learn what else you can do with Garment Designer, this class will teach you how to expand your knowledge and abilities.

STITCH DESIGN: FROM COMPUTER TO KNITTING MACHINE
Learn how Stitch Painter can be used to design the stitch pattern of your knits, and how you can download the designs to your knitting machine using the cable link from Kidoodles.

Friday and Saturday Classes

GARMENT DESIGNER: A VERSATILE AND CREATIVE TOOL FOR DESIGN
Susan Lazear will give you a walking tool of Garment Designer, a software program that is extremely simple to use for knitwear design (and other uses). Users love its simplicity, versatility and all things that allow for good fit and creative outlet.

STITCH DESIGN: FROM COMPUTER TO KNITTING MACHINE
Learn how Stitch Painter can be used to design the stitch pattern of your knits, and how you can download the designs to your knitting machine using the cable link from Kidoodles.

Twenty Pattern Guidelines
If you draft your own knitting patterns, then this class will teach you some basics of patternmaking for both knitting and sewing. These are the twenty ‘aha’s’ that one learns along the way.

ITS' A KNOCK-OFF WORLD
The process of ‘knocking off’ a garment is really not that difficult. Susan will show you how to analyze photos, pictures and even actual garments to determine how one creates them, either by modifying existing patterns, or by creating your own with pattern design software. Learn how to analyze your fit preferences, determine the design details and translate these to a pattern ready for charting, or input into a computer or knit leader/radar. You will be amazed at how easy the process can be.

WHAT'S HOT IN EUROPE FASHION KNITS
What do knitwear trends predict? Let’s take a look, plus we will see what is being worn on the streets and in fashion windows of Italy.

COMBINING FABRIC AND KNIT
Want to speed up the creation of garments? Why not combine knitting and fabric using simple patterns and shapes for the sewn parts. Enjoy the creativity of finding the right yarn to coordinate with your fabrics. Only basic sewing skills are needed.
